after Henri Matisse - Nice, travail et joie
Nice, Work & Joy.
Original Lithograph, 1947, on Arches paper
Size: 640 x 1000 mms
Printed by: Mourlot Freres, Paris, France
Published by: Syndicat d'Initiative de Nice and the Union Méditerranéenne pour l'Art Moderne.
Reference: “Les affiches originales des Maitres de l'Ecole de Paris” (Original Posters from the School of Paris Masters), Fernand Mourlot, p. 40.
Edition: 2000 copies.
Note: This was made after an original painting by the artist. The posters were largely put up in public places as a means of drumming up publicity for the exhibition. Most of these would have been ripped down or pasted over, which means that few can be found in good condition today. These posters have become extremely sought after due to their scarcity.
Condition: Small tears and folds at edges of sheet as is usual with these items.
Provenance: Galerie Michel, Paris. The sale from which this came described the provenance as “Une Galerie Parisienne Historique” and this was no less then the truth. It was founded in 1912 by Robert Gustav Michel and was situated on the Quai Saint-Michel specialising in graphics by Modern Masters. The last owner, Francoise, sadly retired recently due to ill health
Public Collections: MOMA, New York
