Note: This print was issued to accompany the issue of the United Nations adhesive stamps for International Volunteer Day, on the 6th May 1988. We have seen postal envelopes bearing 6 stamps, one of which, is our stamp, signed by the artist. Haring designed these postal envelopes for the issue of these stamps which were franked by the United Nations, as “First Day Covers” - to raise funds. The postal envelope showed the image of our lithograph, besides the adhesive stamps themselves. We have not seen before an example of our lithograph to which an adhesive stamp is attached and franked. We believe this to be a very rare “Official Issue” and desirable therefore.
At its 40th Anniversary session the United Nations General Assembly published a resolution that provided that International Volunteer Day would be celebrated annually on the 5th December. The United Nations Volunteer Program (UNV) was established in 1971 for the purpose of directing professionally qualified men and women on a volunteer basis into development assistance activities. Regular UN volunteers are professionals and technicians who must possess the proper Educational qualifications (bachelors, masters or technical degrees) and at least 2 years of professional experience in order to meet the specific needs of countries requesting their services. UN volunteers are volunteers in the true sense of the term. Sharing their skills at the working level they accept their assignment not as employment but as a service.
