Notes: This is one of three portraits of the artists mother, Laura Hockney, from the “Moving Focus” series made in 1985. This was made at a time when Hockney was exploring alternatives to naturalism (see also Portrait of Mother II, 1985, Tate Gallery P20123). The artist nonetheless captures his mother's personality with love and affection. The work is evidently Cubist inspired.

Hockney's best-known representation of his parents is perhaps the large double portrait My Parents, 1977 (Tate Gallery TO3255).
