Note: This is part of a series of 8 Cherry Blossom prints each of which is titled after one of the 8 virtues of Bushido: Justice, Courage, Mercy, Politeness, Honesty, Honour, Loyalty and Control. These were based on the Samurai code of ethics known as Bushido and were detailed in the book by Nitobe Inazo published in 1900. This detailed the ”Military Knight ways” and described the expectations held of fighting which Japanese nobles were expected to abide by.

Hirst chose the theme of the Cherry Blossom resonating the joy of Spring “Cherry blooms are about beauty and life and death. They’re extreme - there’s something hopeful yet hopeless about them. They’re art but taken from nature…….. Blossoms are optimistic and bright, yet fragile, just as we are and I hope that the Virtues can remind us to always try to get the most from life”
