Note:  Carl Van Vechten was an American writer and photographer who was a patron of theHarlem Rannaisance and the literary executor of Gertrude Stein. In the 1930s, Van Vechten began taking portrait photographs. Among the many individuals he photographed were Marlon Brando, Marc Chagall, Salvador Dali, Ella Fitzgerald, W Somerset Maugham, Henry Miller, Georgi O’Keefe, Sir Lawrence Olivier, Diego Riveira, Cesar Romero, Gertrude Stein, Evelyn Waugh and Jean Cocteau
